Clad equipment is any component or piece of equipment that is made by joining two or more different materials together. Cladding usually serves the dual objective of limiting the drawbacks of one material while combining the benefits of several materials into a unified structure.

Clad Materials of Construction
All of our clad equipment is explosion-bonded. Explosion cladding is a welding process that uses explosions to bond two dissimilar metals while retaining the mechanical and corrosion properties of both parent metals. The process is most commonly used to clad steel with a thin layer of corrosion-resistant alloy metal, such as titanium or zirconium.

Special fabrication techniques are involved with welding explosion clad materials. Titanium and zirconium cannot be welded to steel, so the use of a batten strip must be employed to connect pieces of explosion bonded plate together. TiFab has employed these techniques for over 35 years.
Field welding capabilities
Tifab has ASME & NAVSEA certified field welding capabilities, and our welding teams have worked on projects inside chemical units, pulp and paper mills, refineries, offshore and onshore oil and gas facilities, and defense programs where certification is paramount.
Our on-site services for our titanium clad equipment includes:
- Pressure equipment repair and modification: We offer field welding service for reactors and columns including nozzle additions or relocations, overlay for ferritic interfaces, and code-compliant patch work in titanium or zirconium.
- Heat exchanger service: Our on-site welders can handle tube-to-tubesheet welding, re-tubing and plugging programs, leak tracing, and hydrotest coordination to restore heat transfer and integrity.
